GIVING ONE'S PHOTOGRAPHS ANOTHER LIFE
One’s photographs can have many different uses that utilise them in ways to offer other things .
People take handsome photographs of birds,
or their family, or landscapes.
These photographs at times can be utilised for use in the community.
For instance, the bird pictures can be collected, titled, printed,
laminated and given to local schools
to help children identify local species.
Or accomplished amateurs can volunteer
to photograph the work of local charities,
offering them free photographs
to help their submission for funding or for their websites.
Landscapes can be used to evoke a sense of beauty and longing
to save our environment from the worst of climate change.
In my commercial life I have been assigned many portraits for magazine stories, still-life work for articles and ads about food, and so on, but I have always volunteered to make and provide photographs for other uses,
including my own, as below.
1 This image below is of a DVD cover I photographed and designed
for Ricky Romain and Andrew Goldberg,
two highly skilled musicians.
2 Below is my photographed and designed cover for my first novel.
3. For this ad I utilised screen pulls from my 13 documentaries
I made about European food and culture.
4. This is for a poster for my documentary about the climate crisis.
It was meant to seduce people with the beauty of the image
to engage them into watching the film.
The tree and sun picture is another screen-pull.
5. This is the DVD cover from my second feature film.
6. This is another DVD cover for my documentary
about the Balkan music called Sevdah – a beautiful,
poetic music which embraces and cries about life.
7. This is a programme cover
for a theatre piece by the writer/director David Glass.
A series for the local community youth centre.
As I said at the beginning, there are many ways to use your pictures
to enrich the educational and cultural experiences of your community.
Next week back to the written essays.
Please let me know if you have enjoyed these visual diversions
for the last 7 weeks.
Perhaps by March there will be a series of interviews
with different kinds of artists to enjoy on my Substack.
